Xero Shoes has been turning out some great stuff lately. Our last review was the DayLite Hiker and with some very small caveats, we absolutely loved them. We are still using them and still loving them. New for 2018 is the TerraFlex Trail shoes. These are pegged as trail runners and/or hikers. Obviously, we are much for trail running (although I sure do try) but we sure have used these for some serious hiking and backpacking. Keep on reading for our thoughts on these! If you're familiar with Xero Shoes, or this blog, I'd expect you've read about our review on the Prio model. The TerraFlex is essentially the Prio on steroids! It's got the same great foot-friendly shape, the same flexibility, and same awesome lacing, but with the addition of some serious grip on the sole. They are fairly lightweight (Men's 9 only weighs 9oz each), but have a great sturdy feel. We've worn some very minimal shoes while hiking and the problem is that the Ozarks are EXTREMELY rocky. This means that without careful footing, stone bruising is a real thing. The Terraflex has a layer of Barefoam (essentially a dense, thin layer of EVA to act as a cushion from pointy stuff) and it really works well in dampening rocks and sticks. We were very impressed with the ground feel, but protection that the TerraFlex offers. The lacing is the same standard system that you'll find on all Xero models. This provides a secure fit without pinching. My wife said that she even forgets that she's wearing shoes, which is great because we can focus on the trail and not aching feet. We've been testing these on our day hikes as well as a backpacking trip through the Buffalo River Valley and they performed quite well. We didn't experience any hotspots, blister or discomfort during the 8 mile trip. The grip was excellent in the frozen/muddy ground and our feet breathed well while still staying warm in the cold winter air. We haven't experienced any durability or tearing/ungluing. The only gripes we had was that is super wet mud, the tread clogged up pretty bad. This renders the teeth a little useless but I don't think any other shoes should do a whole lot better. The mud did clear out pretty easily which got us right back into feeling invincible in these. When wearing these on concrete I am starting to feel the lugs through the bottom of the shoe as well... I don't experience that on trails so I wouldn't use these much on concrete. Also the sizing seems to be a bit off. The Xero Shoes website does say to go up a half size to get it right but both my wife and I had to go up a full size. Just be aware! Xero Shoes has hit it out of the park with the Terra Flex, and we are looking forward to what they continue to release in the minimalist category. Our feet love feeling the trail with a little protection and the Terra Flex offers just that.
They sell for the VERY fair price of $99.99. This seems to be on the low end of the trail shoe category in today's world and these are way worth that price! Go check them out on the Xero Shoes site.
